We highly recommend AVG as a great antivirus solution to our customers and ship it preinstalled with most new computer systems we sell.
The bottom line is the AVG free version is how they market their paid product. So every 6 months to a year AVG does a major upgrade of their system, and no longer supports the old free version you have. When they altert their users that the new version is available they provide a link to their website (usually http://www.grisoft.com) And this website doesen’t mention the free version – or if it does I haven’t been able to find it.
The trick is to upgrade to the new free version that comes out around the same time. A good rule of thumb is to go to http://free.grisoft.com or just Google AVG.
You have to make sure you read what you are downloading and follow the links to the “Free” version. Once downloaded just install it over the top of the old one and presto! Free antivirus!
