Ryan Knell's Story - 18 years experience at 22
I started using computers when I was four years old, my first computer was a Tandy 1000 and had to run DOS off a 5 1/4 floppy disk - then you inserted the next disk to load your word processor. When I was four I am told (any maybe vaguely remember) sitting in front of the computer working out maths problems with an abacus and typing them up for my mum to proof read.
I really started getting my experience with a computer when I was six and we owned an Osbourne computer. The computer company went broke and was then taken over by Gateway computers. Needless to say the computer was a lemon and as such I was stuck with fixing the problems that arose every next day, because if I didn't fix them I would be without my beloved computer.
When I was six the motherboard (the main chip that everything plugs into) died and I was stuck disconnecting everything and installing a new one. It worked and I enjoyed many more years out of the computer until my artist mother needed a catalogue designed - and since it would be cheaper to buy me a new computer instead of hiring a graphic designer - my first commercial job was born.
From 1997 until 2001 I was using a Mac and became very used to fixing the various problems that arose from there (granted most of them were caused by myself)
After 2001 I moved back into the PC (IBM Comatable) world and developed a love of websites and 3D animation for which I won the Ministers Award for Excellence in Information Commuinication Technology, only awarded to the top 30 ICT students in Queensland, and was given a free week long holiday in Brisabane two years in a row.
After high school I took a year off and developed a time billing program initally developed to help me billing my web design work, but was later redeveloped to accomodate professional services such as solicitors - for which my dad is one. Due to my lack or marketing experience this didn't take off as I would have hoped and was prompted to undertake a business degree at QUT.
Whilst doing the degree my girlfriend fell pregnant and I had to cut my studies short. While looking around for an apartment in Brisbane we had the brainwave to move up to Sunshine Coast, not only was it easier to find rent but the atmosphere and location was much more enjoyable. We finally settled in Marcoola where I proceeded to re-launch my web design business.
After many weeks of frustration and realising I didn't really want to do websites any more, I went to a Rotary meeting - the Rotary Club of Maroochydore, a very good club, if you would like to visit just let me know - and one of the members asked if I could fix his computer. At first I had a bit of hesitation with the idea, knowing how some problems couldn't be easily fixed from some bad past experiences, I declined. That weekend a family member asked again if I could fix their PC and I realised I should give it a go.
It was a simple virus issue and I realised that I could be of real help to people in the community and began to grow that side of the business. Within a few months I had thrown in Web Design in favour of Computer Repair and have been doing it now for over 1 year full time.
